What Is a Chin Implant?

A chin implant is a facial plastic surgery procedure that places a carefully selected implant over the chin bone to increase projection, improve contour, and bring the chin into better proportion with the nose, jawline, and surrounding facial features.

Also known as chin augmentation or implant-based mentoplasty, the procedure is designed for patients with an underprojected or disproportionately small chin. The implant adds structure beneath the soft tissue rather than simply filling the skin. This allows the surgeon to make a measured, lasting change to the profile.

Chin implants come in different sizes and shapes. Some primarily increase forward projection, while others extend along the jaw to create a wider or more defined contour. Selection depends on the patient’s bone structure, facial width, profile, and aesthetic goals.

The best result is rarely about creating the largest possible chin. It is about finding the degree of projection that brings the rest of the face into focus.

What Aesthetic Issues Do Chin Implants Address?

The chin plays a quiet but influential role in facial balance. When it sits too far back, the nose can appear more prominent, the jawline may look less defined, and the transition between the face and neck can feel softer.

Chin implant surgery may address:

  • A weak or receding chin
  • Limited forward chin projection
  • A disproportionately small chin
  • Imbalance between the nose and chin
  • A lower face that appears short
  • Poor definition where the chin meets the jawline
  • Mild chin asymmetry
  • A profile that lacks structural balance
  • Congenital underdevelopment of the chin

A chin implant cannot correct every lower-face concern. It does not remove fat beneath the chin, tighten loose neck skin, or correct a significant bite problem. Patients with jaw misalignment, functional concerns, or more complex skeletal deficiencies may need evaluation for genioplasty or orthognathic surgery.

Precise diagnosis matters. A soft jawline may come from a recessed chin, excess submental fat, skin laxity, or a combination of all three.

What Are the Benefits of Chin Implant Surgery?

A relatively small structural adjustment can change the way the entire profile reads. Chin augmentation is especially effective when the implant is selected in relation to the nose, lips, jaw, and neck rather than treating the chin as an isolated feature.

Potential benefits include:

  • Improves forward chin projection
  • Creates better balance between the chin and nose
  • Adds definition to the lower face
  • Strengthens the transition into the jawline
  • Provides a customized shape and degree of projection
  • Creates a structural change without moving the jawbone
  • Uses a discreet incision
  • May be combined with other facial procedures
  • Offers a long-lasting alternative to temporary chin filler
  • Can make the neck appear more refined in properly selected patients

A well-planned implant should look integrated with the face. It should not appear overly broad, pointed, or visibly artificial.

Am I a Candidate for a Chin Implant?

Good Candidates

Chin implants are generally suited to healthy adults whose facial growth is complete and whose primary concern is limited chin projection.

You may be a good candidate if you:

  • Have a weak, recessed, or disproportionately small chin
  • Want stronger lower-face definition
  • Are physically healthy and at a stable weight
  • Do not smoke or can stop nicotine as directed
  • Have realistic expectations about the degree of correction
  • Understand the procedure’s risks and recovery
  • Do not have an active dental or oral infection
  • Want a long-lasting alternative to injectable chin enhancement

During consultation, your surgeon will study your face from the front, profile, and three-quarter views. Chin height, width, projection, symmetry, dental alignment, and the relationship between the chin and neck all influence the recommendation.

Who May Need a Different Approach?

An implant adds volume over the bone. It cannot move the jaw, substantially shorten or lengthen the chin, or correct an abnormal bite.

Sliding genioplasty may be more appropriate when the chin needs significant horizontal or vertical repositioning. Orthognathic surgery may be required when the underlying concern involves jaw alignment or dental function. Chin filler can be considered when a patient wants a temporary, nonsurgical change or needs only a small degree of projection.

Patients with significant submental fullness or neck laxity may benefit from combining chin augmentation with neck liposuction, a neck lift, or another facial-contouring procedure.

How Should I Prepare for Chin Implant Surgery?

Preparation begins with a facial assessment and a clear understanding of what the implant can achieve.

  1. Complete your consultation.
Your surgeon will review your profile, facial proportions, medical history, previous procedures, and desired degree of projection.
  2. Discuss dental and oral health.
Report recent dental procedures, gum disease, oral infections, implants, or planned dental work. This is particularly important if an incision inside the mouth is being considered.
  3. Review medications and supplements.
Certain medications and supplements may increase bleeding risk. Do not change a prescription unless your prescribing clinician and surgical team provide coordinated instructions.
  4. Stop nicotine as directed.
Smoking, vaping, and other nicotine products can restrict circulation and interfere with incision healing.
  5. Arrange transportation and support.
You will need someone to drive you home. Depending on the anesthesia plan, your surgeon may also recommend having an adult stay with you during the first night.
  6. Prepare suitable foods and recovery supplies.
Patients having an intraoral incision may need soft foods and a prescribed mouth rinse. Keep recommended dressings, medications, and cold compresses readily available.

The Chin Implant Procedure

Chin implant surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure in Heights Plastic Surgery’s private, on-site surgical center. It usually takes approximately 45 minutes to one hour, although timing can vary when another facial procedure is included.

Local anesthesia, intravenous sedation, or general anesthesia may be used. Your surgeon will recommend the appropriate option based on the surgical plan, incision location, combined procedures, and your comfort.

An incision is created either beneath the chin or inside the lower lip. Each approach has distinct considerations.

Incision Beneath the Chin

A small submental incision gives the surgeon direct access to the chin bone. The resulting scar is positioned in a naturally shadowed area beneath the chin.

Incision Inside the Mouth

An intraoral incision avoids an external scar but requires careful oral hygiene during recovery. Temporary dietary modifications and a prescribed mouth rinse may be recommended.

Through the incision, the surgeon creates a precise pocket directly over the chin bone. The selected implant is placed and checked for projection, symmetry, and stability before the incision is closed.

Implant position is critical. A pocket that is too large may allow movement, while an implant that does not match the anatomy can look or feel unbalanced. The surgical plan accounts for facial width, chin shape, and the contours extending toward the jaw.

Possible risks include bleeding, infection, asymmetry, numbness, implant displacement, prolonged swelling, unfavorable scarring, capsular contracture, and the possibility of revision surgery.

Chin Implant Results

Greater chin projection is visible immediately, but swelling can make the early result look fuller or less defined than expected. The implant may also feel firm or unfamiliar while the surrounding tissues heal.

During the first few weeks, swelling gradually decreases and the lower face begins to look more balanced. Residual firmness and subtle swelling can take several months to resolve fully.

A solid chin implant is designed to provide a lasting structural change. It does not naturally dissolve like injectable filler. Revision or removal may still become necessary if the implant shifts, becomes infected, creates an unwanted contour, or no longer matches the patient’s preferences.

Results depend on implant selection, surgical placement, facial anatomy, and healing. Perfect symmetry cannot be guaranteed, and some natural difference between the two sides of the face will remain.

Recovery After Chin Implant Surgery

Most patients plan for approximately one to two weeks of visible recovery. Swelling, bruising, soreness, tightness, and temporary numbness are common during the early phase.

The First 48 Hours

Swelling is usually most noticeable during the first few days. Keeping the head elevated and using cold compresses as directed can improve comfort. A supportive dressing may be placed around the chin.

The First Week

Bruising and swelling begin to settle. Many patients feel comfortable returning to desk work after about one week, although the chin may still look slightly full. Talking and smiling can feel tight at first.

Patients with an incision inside the mouth may be asked to follow a soft or liquid diet temporarily and use a special mouth rinse.

The Following Weeks

The implant settles as the tissues heal around it. Strenuous exercise, contact sports, and activities that place pressure on the chin remain restricted until the surgical team provides clearance.

Final refinement develops gradually. The chin should look increasingly integrated with the face as swelling resolves.

Aftercare Following Chin Implant Surgery

Protecting the implant and incision during early healing helps reduce avoidable complications.

Patients are generally advised to:

  • Keep the head elevated while resting
  • Wear dressings or support garments as directed
  • Use cold compresses only according to postoperative instructions
  • Take medications as prescribed
  • Avoid touching, pressing, or sleeping directly on the chin
  • Maintain careful oral hygiene after an intraoral incision
  • Follow temporary dietary instructions
  • Postpone strenuous exercise until cleared
  • Avoid nicotine throughout recovery
  • Attend every scheduled follow-up visit

Call the office if you develop increasing redness, worsening pain, fever, drainage, an opening along the incision, or a sudden change in implant position. Chest pain, shortness of breath, or an unusual heartbeat requires immediate medical attention.
